I’m approaching my first week where I’m not traveling after many, many weeks. Did you hear me sigh with relief?
Keep in mind, there is a possibility I might have to travel on Wednesday, but at this very moment, I don’t have a flight this week. Until then, this will be my drive home every day, mountains in the distance…
Now, don’t get me wrong: I love seeing the country, I love seeing my co-workers, and y’all, I love being in front of my customers. True story: I even love staying in hotels… It’s all about my bed being made for me every day and all those pillows… how decadent is that?
I am thrilled to be home this week though. My suitcase is unpacked and tucked away in my guest room, and I’m excited to get caught up on life.
So… life on the road hasn’t been as easy this time around. Remember when I used to travel all the time? Well, I’m back in full road warrior status, but it’s different this go ’round. And, I’m not managing it very well.
What makes it more challenging this time around? I’m not traveling alone. When you travel alone, you have the ability to have dinner at Subway, cook your Jenny Craig meal at the hotel, and spend your evenings at the gym.
Last week, I was at a trade show. The show was great; the food was not. I skipped the snack bar, and ran off to Starbucks for lunch each day. Starbucks, however, is far from what I want to be eating at lunchtime, but when you compare it to chicken tenders, hamburgers, and pizza… it’s a darn good choice!
By day, I do pretty well. I pack my Jenny Craig cereal, and eat my first meal of the day on plan. I find the best possible lunch options, but it’s when the evenings come along that the chaos ensues.
When you travel with a team, there are dinners and late nights at the bar and lots of togetherness. Being that I’m still just 90 days with my new company, it’s a little early to branch off on my own. The evenings involve relationship building and are culturally important. All that being said, I’m saying it right here… I need to stop with the drinking. The wine has been flowing, and I am not a big drinker unless I’m on these trips. It’s just empty calories. And, frankly, I don’t feel my best when I’ve been drinking the night before.
Not being a morning person, I also haven’t been able to make am workouts become a thing… but I’ve got to find some way to add some movement and healthy living into my world. As mentioned, the nights are busy… so if I’m going to get any activity in, it’s going to have to be in the morning.
There’s a lot to work on the next time I walk out the door with a suitcase. The meals have to get better. The drinking has to slow down. The working out needs to resume.
Since this is a week home, I’m determined to come up with ideas for how to navigate this better in upcoming weeks. So, let’s talk about it…
What are your best travel tips?
